NEW RESEARCH reveals the controversial Glandovey and Idris Rds intersection is not suitable for heavy vehicles. The Glandovey, Idris and Straven Residents’ Association commissioned a tracking analysis to look into traffic using the intersection. The report from traffic engineering company Traffic Design Group showed heavy vehicles could not navigate any turns of the Fendalton intersection without cutting into other lanes. It comes during a year-long campaign from residents to improve safety at the intersection. Residents want to see heavy vehicles banned from driving through the area and this report only cements that, group member and Glandovey Rd resident Nigel Francis said. The report has been sent to the city council. City councillor Raf Manji told the Western News that when council resumed after the Christmas break, it would look into banning heavy vehicles from the area. •Turn to page 5

THE SAGA rolls on. On page 1 today we reveal the latest chapter in Fendalton residents’ bid to make an intersection in their suburb safer. The very proactive Glandovey, Idris and Straven Residents’ Association commissioned a private engineering company to provide data which they say strengthens their case that big trucks need to be banned from using the intersection. The residents have a very valid point. It’s the same across Christchurch in fact: Trucks now take short cuts through suburban streets to get to their destinations quicker. Battle against quarry plan begins By Julia Evans TEMPLETON residents are gearing up to battle against plans for a new quarry development. Last week Fulton Hogan put forward a plan for a 170ha quarry on Templeton’s Dawsons, Curraghs and Jones Rds. The announcement comes as Yaldhurst residents continue to battle the noise and dust effects from nearby quarries, which have forced them to wear protective face masks outside their own homes. Testing stations have been set up in Yaldhurst to monitor air quality. Templeton Residents’ Association chairman Garry Kilday said the proposal has sparked “major concerns” for nearby homes in terms of dust, noise and heavy traffic. “The more we look into it, there are more and more issues there are . . . the dust and noise has the potential to reduce house prices. People could be out of pocket because of this,” he said. In a letter sent to residents near the proposed quarry, Fulton Hogan said it would be there for 25 to 40 years to “keep up with ongoing demand for aggregates for greater Christchurch.”

PLANS: The letter from Fulton Hogan included a map showing the location of the proposed 170ha quarry on Dawsons, Curraghs and Jones Rds. “We see this location as being suitable because the site has few neighbours and is close to State Highway One.” Mr Kilday said during a southerly wind, homes could be inundated with dust, which could have an impact on health. “Reading up on the impact silica in dust can have on respiratory health is a huge concern,” Mr Kilday said. “We

just don’t want it to get to the point where we have to wear masks.” But Fulton Hogan said in the letter it is working on “key quarry management plans” regarding noise and dust. The company will apply for resource consents from the Selwyn District Council and Environment Canterbury in February.

Tuesday January 9 2018

Mr Kilday said although going up against Fulton Hogan was a “David and Goliath” situation, he believed the voices of the people should be heard. There will be a meeting between the Templeton and Weedons residents associations tomorrow at 7.30pm in St Saviour’s Anglican Church on Kirk Rd to establish the next move.

Rent rises cause for alarm Ilam and Upper Riccarton Residents’ Association chairman Phil McGoldrick writes about how the Labour Government may affect their community and how landlords need to step-up Our new Government has moved very swiftly to deliver on some of its pre-election promises. Real estate has traditionally thrived under a Labour-led Government but early moves suggest it may not be quite the same during this term. A ban on overseas buyers, mooted changes to the Residential Tenancies Act placing further onus on landlords, the almost inevitable imposition of a capital gains tax, and serious property investors may be questioning the future viability of what they do. My wife and I are serious and long-term residential investors and will adapt to these changes, albeit obvious the returns for providing this essential and responsible service will diminish.

Readers respond to the article about plans for Denton Park’s mega facility not including a cricket pitch Matt Reid – Embrace change. Think of the benefits to the wider community.

Free university education and more handouts to students concern me because such handouts are always inflationary. The day that student loans were introduced and students were given unfettered and increased spending power, student rentals started to soar. Early speculation that the next quantum rise in rents will occur as a result of further Government handouts is a cause for alarm. Landlords who seek to gouge this handout in my book will be socially reprehensible. As a group, we must exercise social responsibility. My biggest beef as a fellow landlord and chairman of the Ilam Upper Riccarton Residents’ Association, is that far too many landlords do nothing to maintain their properties, and more particularly their gardens and grounds, and are decimating our international reputation as the Garden City – and I do

not limit my criticism to student landlords. I think it is essential in a tenancy agreement that either the landlord or the tenant is burdened with grounds maintenance so that uniform standards are maintained in areas where hard-working, decent families with community pride do their bit to maintain aesthetics and protect their investments. And property management companies must perform as well in protecting the assets of their clients and upholding values in the communities where they derive their livings. In the forthcoming year, my association will introduce several initiatives to ensure standards are brought back to days gone by.

Diane Adams – My sister said why not put the library, council building and swimming pool etc in the Islington-Waterloo industrial area? There is plenty of ground, not far from the school, car parking, and over the weekend (there are) more car parks as most firms are closed . . . Waterloo also has the bus service going through there.

That would put an end to fast food restaurants and others manipulating the system. Stephan Lance Gardiner – All fast food outlets monitor that . . . the rule is you have to have worked the same day at least three weeks in a row prior. New Stock in Now TRAFFIC TROUBLE: A report commissioned by a residents’ association revealed heavy vehicles can not get around corners at Glandovey and Idris Rds without cutting into other lanes. PHOTO: MARTIN HUNTER

Report highlights danger at intersection •From page 1 Mr Francis said the sooner trucks are banned from the area, the better. He said the design of the intersection means there is no room for heavy vehicles, cars and cyclists, which makes it dangerous. “There’s a lot of heavy traffic that jams its way down here,

down these narrow streets. It’s dangerous for us and anyone using the roads,” Mr Francis said. Group spokesman James Wilding said heavy vehicles are common in the area since it was upgraded from lights to a roundabout three years ago. The report comes following

the release of city council safety audits to the group via the Local Government Official Information and Meeting Act in November. The audit said “death or serious injury” at the intersection of Glandovey and Idris Rds is “likely” once every five to 10 years due to visibility issues between vehicles and

pedestrians. During the campaign to address roading concerns, city council chief executive Karleen Edwards recommended residents not be involved in a workshop to find solutions. However, the FendaltonWaimairi-Harewood Community Board went against that decision.

Ballet star blitzes exams By Georgia O’Connor-Harding WHEN JACK Cusack, 9, first started ballet he couldn’t even skip. But hard work and discipline has paid off with the young dancer, who attends the Sharon Howells School of Dance, walking away achieving the highest exam results in his ballet class. Jack, of Avonhead, achieved two gold medals and a distinction in both grade one and two in Royal Academy of Dance New Zealand ballet exams recently. His mother Dale Cusack said Jack hopes to one day dance for the Royal New Zealand Ballet. She said her son struggled to skip, he went home and practised all week until he could. Liking ballet so much, Jack then decided to study two ballet exams simultaneously. “He was nervous at the beginning as he was the only boy in his class but the girls have warmed to him and love the opportunity of dancing with a young prince for a change,” Mrs Cusack said. Director Sharon Howells said taking a boy into ballet is very special and Jack’s mind and heart is in dance. “I said to his father: ‘Do you

realise he may be the only boy amongst all the girls?’ But it didn’t worry him, he really wanted to dance,” she said. She said because there is a stigma about male ballet dancers, she tells all her male dancers “if you are going to do this you

have got to be good.” Miss Howells said Jack’s dreams are out there and he wants to work hard. “He couldn’t skip. He was uncoordinated. The next lesson he was skipping. Every lesson he improved,” she said.

THANKFUL: Worshipful master of Unity Lodge 271 Geoff Cain (right) presents Community Patrol Riccarton representatives Ivan Jonasen (left), Joan Pearson and Dave Gillett with two radiotelephones.

Patrol receives radiotelephones A TRUST has donated more than $3000 to Community Patrol Riccarton for radiotelephones. The patrol applied to the Canterbury Masonic Charitable Trust for the funding to provide extra security to members when patrolling in vehicles. The group had previously approached Unity Lodge and obtained funds which helped with the purchase of a portable automatic defibrillator. Patrol treasurer Joan Pearson said they were really grateful for the money as their security was “somewhat slim.” She said members needed the phones to communicate with each other when they separate.

The land for the Riccarton Masonic Centre was purchased in 1925 for 285 pounds and the Lodge building as it was then known, was constructed and then dedicated in August 1929. Originally the home of Lodge Riccarton 276, it subsequently combined with Lodge Cashmere due to falling membership, and was renamed Unity Lodge 271. Watch Jonty’s story at www.star.kiwi

Take part in iconic fun run and you will When you run, walk, jog, rollerblade, or push your friends on a bed at the Star Media City2Surf in March you’ll be helping 10-yearold Jonty Gray and other children like him. Andrew King reports

UPBEAT: Star Media events manager Vanessa Fleming and Jonty out for a run.

IN MARCH last year, Juliet and Hamish Gray got some of the worst news a parent could receive – their eight-year-old son had cancer. Jonty Gray had been “offcolour” for a few weeks and was having regular headaches. On a family trip over Easter weekend last year he became breathless while walking up a hill and developed bruises on his body. His family returned from Wanaka and took him to Christchurch Hospital where he was diagnosed with T-cell leukaemia. Fast-forward 21 months and the 10-year-old’s outcome is looking positive after numerous hospital visits, about six to nine months of intensive

chemotherapy, and plenty of support from his family, friends and hospital staff. In March next year, Jonty has been asked to sound the horn which will start thousands of participants off in the Star Media City2Surf fun run. It seems fitting considering his role as an ambassador with partner charity, the Child Cancer Foundation. Participants will be able to start their own fundraising pages or join the ‘courage team’, which will be fundraising on the day, or make a one-off donation. Those who have signed up for the event can also visit the Child Cancer Foundation tent and receive a post-run sports massage by giving a donation. Mrs Gray, who is a dentist, said Jonty is responding well to chemotherapy, which he will finish in July 2019.

Then doctors will monitor his bone marrow and watch for any side effects from the medication used to treat his cancer. When he first started showing signs of being unwell, it wasn’t apparent at the start just how sick he was. “We just told him to drink more water and go to bed earlier,” Mrs Gray said as he was complaining of headaches. When he was admitted to hospital, he was diagnosed straight away. “You think it can’t be happening to your family, but then that is not true as two to three children are diagnosed with cancer each week,” she said. About a week later, Jonty started his treatment, but he wasn’t letting it get him down. The creative boy came up with ways to amuse himself while in hospital.

So I scooted around the wards with it. But then she brought in a unicycle and carried a baby around while attached to her pump. That was hard to beat,” he laughed. He also has fun with the hospital staff. “We play a game with the anaesthetist where he will set a total for me to count to before I fall asleep,” he said. He said he had beaten the anaesthetist a few times, but some times he would cheat. “I would pretend to push the button that started the drugs and start counting, by time they had realised that I hadn’t pushed it I had already counted to about 10,” he laughed. Jonty attends Cashmere Primary School and will be starting year six next year. He loves to draw and has taken to designing houses. Earlier in the year, he designed new railroad lines for Kaikoura to replace the ones damaged in the earthquakes. While he does get tired easy, he loves to get out and play

BROUGHT TO YOU BY... HOW TO COOK BARBECUE GRILLED BUTTERFLIED WHOLE CHICKEN

STEAK AND MUSHROOM PIE Ingredients

Ingredients

4 large portobello mushrooms, sliced 800g tri-tip steak, cut into 2cm pieces 20g butter 2 Tbsp oil 1 onion, chopped 2 cloves garlic, crushed 1 serving flour, seasoned, for dusting 2 cups beef stock ½ tsp mixed herbs ½ cup red wine 1 Tbsp flour, mixed with 1 Tbsp melted butter for the thickening 1 sheet short pastry (savoury) 1 sheet puff pastry 1 egg, for glazing

1 whole butterflied chicken 1 to taste salt & freshly ground pepper Barbecue sauce Directions Preheat grill to medium. Get surface temperature to about 200 deg C. Clean and oil well. Clean the chicken if you desire and pat dry. Cut the backbone out of the chicken with sharp kitchen scissors. You could use a knife, but the scissors are much safer and work great. With a large knife, give the breastbone a large nick in the front of the chicken to help the bird lay flat. Rinse the inside of the bird out, trim any loose fat and extra skin. Pat dry again. Give the bird a good sprinkle of salt and pepper. You could use any seasoning you want here. Place skin down on the grill. Flip after you get a nice browning on the skin after about 12-15min.

Directions

Give the chicken a good brushing of barbecue sauce. Grill another 3-4min until the sauce is browning well.

Total grilling on the second side should take 20-25min. Let set for 5min then cut and serve.

oil in a frying pan. Brown the meat in batches then add to the onions. Add a little of the stock to the pan to deglaze then pour into the pot. Add the remaining stock to the meat along with the herbs, red wine and mushrooms. Cook on a low heat for 1 hour or until the meat is tender. Remove ¼ cup of the liquid and add to the thickening, combine then tip back into the pot and stir to thicken. Check the seasoning (add salt and pepper if you wish). Cool the mixture to room temperature. Line a 23cm pie tin with the short pastry and trim the edges. Line with baking paper and rice and bake blind for 15-20min until just cooked. Remove the paper. Fill the pastry with the meat mixture. Dampen the edges, and top with the puff pastry, pressing gently to seal. Use any extra pastry for decoration. Make a few slits in the top with a knife to release steam during baking. Brush the top with egg. Place into the oven for 35-40min until the pastry is risen and golden. Remove and serve hot.

Held over five days, the inaugural Songwriters Retreat NZ is an opportunity for songwriters to create and present new work in a clear, well designed practical programme, including one on one coaching, tutor and peer feedback and co-writing sessions. Songwriters Retreat NZ offers tried and tested methods for stimulating inspiration and turning it into real songs people want to hear. A maximum of12 places are available – enough to allow supportive musical connection, but also enough time for individual mentoring. Go from thinking about songwriting to doing it. Go from wanting to be a songwriter to being one. For more information, bookings and full programme go to www.songdoctor.co.nz.
